Three NYC-Inspired Healthy Smoothie Recipes

When you live in NYC, you get pretty good at eating healthy on the go. One of my favorite energy boosters if I’m running late in the morning or need a quick afternoon pick-me-up are smoothies. They are also amazing for sneaking in some greens (aka fiber).

But buying quality healthy smoothies in a juice shop takes a serious toll on the bank account. One time I went a little crazy with the add-ins and ended up spending $15 on one drink. I’m embarrassed by this amount, but it honestly wasn’t that hard to do.

Making your own smoothie at home tastes just as good and is much healthier for your wallet. Unlimited free add-ins!

Plus, it’s so easy. Here are the top three healthy smoothie recipes I created based on three of my favorite store-bought drinks.

Tropical Oasis (Inspired by Mr. Greengenes at Juice Generation)

This green smoothie is great for a quick breakfast, especially if you had a heavy dinner the night before. The greens will flush out your system and the spirulina will give you a great energy boost to tackle the day.

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 cup frozen mango
  • 1-2 cups spinach
  • 1 cup kale
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 tbsp spirulina (optional)
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (optional)

Up & At ’Em! (Inspired by Harvey Wallbanger at Juice Press)

I love this drink after a morning workout when I’m hungry but also craving caffeine. It’s basically like a coffee dessert for breakfast. What could be better?

  • 1 cup cold brew coffee
  • ½ cup almond milk
  • 1 tbsp. cacao powder
  • 1 frozen banana
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • 1 scoop vanilla protein powder (optional)
  • 1 tbsp. maple syrup (optional)

Loco for Coco (Inspired by Joyful Almond at Juice Generation)

If you add coconut cream to this recipe, the smoothie gets even creamier and the coconut flavor really pops.

Sprinkle some cacao nibs on top to make it extra delicious.

  • 1 cup really cold coconut milk
  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 tbsp. coconut butter
