The Best Vegan Eats in Oslo, Norway

I recently traveled all around Norway, from the hills of Bergen to the quaint fish towns on the Lofoten Islands. The country’s capital, Oslo, was one of my favorite cities. Not only did it have a wide selection of things to do, but it also had a diverse and delicious vegan eating scene. Here are some of the best vegan eats in Oslo.

1. Oslo Raw

Inside Oslo Raw

Located about a 15-minute walk outside of central city, Oslo Raw is a must-go if you love vegan, refined sugar-free desserts and cozy, plant-filled cafes. They have a brunch special (about $17 USD) that includes three raw cake samples, an avocado and tomato salad on delicious crispbread, and your choice of an acai bowl or chia seed pudding. Plus a latte! It was the vegan brunch of dreams.

The service is excellent and the waitstaff is really friendly. I accidentally shattered three water glasses because I’m a klutz, and the barista was very nice to me about it. I hope they don’t remember me because the next time I’m in Oslo, I’m definitely going back.

Recommendation: Mocha espresso raw cake with a side of nice cream

2. Freddy Fuego

A burrito joint started by an Irish man who fell in love with a Norwegian woman, Freddy Fuego is one of the best fresh Mexican places I found in Oslo. Not strictly vegetarian or vegan, they make a vegan burrito that is out of this world. Using sweet potatoes instead of meat, plus flavorful black beans and all the veggies you can handle on a whole-wheat wrap, I scarfed down my burrito faster than you can say Freddy Fuego five times fast.

Tip: They charge more if you eat in-house. But there’s a nice park and river walk close by, if you’d like to save some kroner and eat outside.

Recommendation: Vegan burrito with all the toppings, plus guac (duh, guac)

3. Funky Fresh Foods

The jackfruit burger comes slathered in vegan cheese and with a side of sweet potato fries.

Tucked away next to the architecture and design center in Oslo, Funky Fresh Foods is casual by daytime and becomes a sit-down restaurant at night. I recommend going during the day because they ran out of some things by the time I arrived in the evening.

The chocolate mylkshake comes with a kumquat and coconut flake garnish.

A menu of mostly burgers with one salad and a special of the day, it’s basically a vegan comfort food restaurant. I fully embraced this and got a jackfruit burger with a chocolate mylkshake. This is probably one of the best vegan burger and mylkshake places in central Oslo.

Recommendation: Chocolate Mylkshake with a side of sweet potato fries

4. The Fragrance of the Heart

Right next to the Rådhuset, Oslo’s city hall, The Fragrance of the Heart is a cute little café with indoor and outdoor seating. Although its drink menu is standard, they have one hot and several cold vegan meals of the day to choose from, plus some vegan treats. They have no sign about free wifi, but just ask the manager and he’ll give it to you!

Recommendation: Vegan quiche
